For One

For One

Across a room
they toast to loneliness
with empty glasses
and wishes without words

Singles order doubles
of chilled drinks
that scorch throats
as they heal scars

Desire burns as
they melt into chairs,
the night’s pain fading
with the memory of love

From corner tables
they hide behind smiles
from those that cannot pass by
–but it does not stop the hours

The venue is emptying
but the avenue is empty,
lungs fill with cold
and even the streetlights stand alone

Inside, lover’s embrace
a light exposing
the permeating pain,
like headlights making the rain
