The conventional view of beauty in our world is based entirely on ego.
I was at the Greater Vancouver Regional Zoo in Aldergrove on the weekend. Even before I paid for my ticket I had a revelation.
As you enter, you walk past some Asian mountain goats of some sort. They sat atop a fake mountaintop posing for pictures like children in an inflatable pool that are keenly aware that it is not the ocean.
Being in the movie business, I get to see how styrofoam bricks translate into images on screen. The view of the goats on the hill could convincingly be cropped into a scene of a wild mountainous valley region. Yet the illusion would fail. In nature it would be beautiful.
I wondered why this scene was devoid of beauty. The answer came effortlessly–beauty is freedom.
